On February 26–28, 2025, Professor Sidi Ahmed Mahmoudi, from the University of Mons (UMONS), Belgium 🇧🇪, actively participated in the 20th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP 2025), hosted in Porto, Portugal. The event brought together researchers, industry professionals, and academics specializing in computer vision, AI, and image processing. 📸🤖

Professor Mahmoudi chaired Session 20, which focused on "Image and Video Processing and Analysis", facilitating insightful discussions on innovative research in the field.

During the conference, Professor Mahmoudi presented a research paper entitled: "Edge AI System for Real-Time and Explainable Forest Fire Detection using Compressed Deep Learning Models" 🌳🔥

Forests are critical ecosystems but remain highly vulnerable to devastating fires caused by natural phenomena or human activities. Professor Mahmoudi’s research addresses the urgent need for reliable and efficient tools for firefighters and emergency responders. 🚒🌲

The presented work introduces an embedded Edge AI system designed to detect forest fires and smoke in real-time using compressed deep learning models. These models are lightweight, accurate, and explainable, making them ideal for use in challenging, real-world environments.
